Lakes, rivers, and a variety of other wetlands are home to a great diversity of life ranging from insects, marine invertebrates, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and larger animals such as birds and mammals. They're also home to unique floral communities that are adapted to living in wet conditions. Canada contains 20% of the world's freshwater, much of it found in the Northern Boreal forest. We all depend on the services these ecosystems provide. These include; access to clean drinking water, protection from storms, recreational areas, and fisheries, to name a few. Contributing factors to their decline include; pollution, invasive species, habitat destruction, and drainage for agriculture. I hope these photos inspire you to advocate for these incredible ecosystems!
